WazeSpecifically focused on traffic navigation, Waze is one of the few navigation apps that pack a crowdsourcing engine. Pros: Apple Maps comes with a very clean UI, 3D navigation if DCE is available, rich map details, stop signs, and traffic light information.Ĭons: The app doesn’t work on Android and Android Auto, lacks essential features such as satellite navigation, and certain capabilities take years to become available for all users. Apple typically rolls out new features at a very slow pace, especially in non-U.S. The detailed city experience with the new maps, originally announced in mid-2018, is yet to reach the global availability phase. However, Apple seems to ignore the feature requests and stick with the current capabilities.Īpple Maps also sports a half-baked incident reporting system, and its primary focus is on the United States and a series of other large markets. The latter is unexpected, to say the least, especially because satellite maps are already available in Apple Maps. However, as many eventually figured out, Apple Maps still lacks essential capabilities, including offline maps and satellite navigation. You can find my conclusions below, along with the pros and cons of each application.Īpple MapsAs the native navigation app on iPhone, Apple Maps is the go-to destination for most Apple users. In the last seven days, I tested most high-profile navigation apps specifically to determine to what degree they can become a fully featured Google Maps alternative. What’s much more difficult is finding one that’s worth your time, as some of the navigation apps currently up for grabs from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store are pretty useless. Companies like Apple, TomTom, and Sygic are investing heavily in their sat-nav solutions, especially as the software side of the automotive industry is slowly becoming a money-making machine.Īs such, finding a Google Maps alternative isn’t necessarily a difficult thing to do. The reason the Tbox Plus can do it is the navigation apps are installed on the Tbox Plus itself and the navigation information isn't transmitted to the vehicle. It’s also not a secret that the competition in the navigation space has gotten fiercer. The vehicle knows when Android Auto or Carplay is running using navigation and won't allow both (at this time). I wish he would have really shown the capabilities of the Tbox Plus as a standalone android device that doesn't require android auto or carplay.Īs for the adapters that allow parallel navigation for battery preconditioning, none do that unfortunately. Yes it has that feature, but it does SO much more and there are ways to work through the connectivity issues he experienced. Honestly, the Tbox Plus is an android AI Box for your car first, and a wireless android auto and carplay adapter second. Corbin said he doesn't recommend it due to the wireless android auto and carplay taking a while to connect for him and the audio quality (which makes me think his google assistant was set to be listening for the "hey google" phrase, limiting it to the voice channel), but said its redeeming characteristic is the ability to install various android apps. LOLĬlick to expand.Yeah tbh I was kind of disappointed in that review. F1 is here in Las Vegas this week, so traffic is a disaster and I’d rather stay off the road. I’ll try to confirm tomorrow if I go out somewhere. I always run all nav without voice prompts as they annoy me, besides, with the HUD, they are right there onscreen. o after starting onboard nav, I hit the ⭐, onboard nav moved to the right ⅓ and in the HUD, while AM took the left ⅔. I use split screen and the ⭐ on the lower infotainment panel to switch to CP. Of course, there is a third, I’m using an iPhone, which usually behaves differently that Android.Īnd fourth, IIRC, I started nav in AM, then onboard. □□♂️īut second, and most importantly, I recently found that I can use both onboard and Apple Maps for navigation at the same time in Split View with my old V3 CarLinkit adapter. Yes, I know I’m in the minority on this matter. Why? Because I like the directions in the HUD. I understand its limitations and deal with them. First, I don’t find the onboard nav terrible.
